What's new in SmartGit 17

Real Dark Theme

SmartGit now supports an operating-system independent dark theme, which was our #1 requested feature on smartgit.userecho.com.

Rename Detection in working tree

Renamed files will now be detected in the working tree view, as git status does. In addition to Git's rename detection, SmartGit will also detect renames for untracked/missing file pairs.

Conflict Solver: show base file

From the Conflict Solver, you can now open an additional three-way-comparison for the conflict base file. This becomes useful when investigating complex conflicts for which the file has been significantly changed in both branches.

Installation Instructions

Windows

  • if you have an older SmartGit version installed, exit SmartGit (use Project|Exit; there should be no more SmartGit tray icon),
  • unpack the downloaded file,
  • launch the installer and follow the instructions

macOS

  • if you have an older SmartGit version installed, quit SmartGit,
  • open the downloaded file (e.g. by double clicking it) and move the application directory structure to a directory of your choice (typically /Applications)
  • if you prefer, drag & drop the application to the dock to create an icon

Linux

  • unpack the downloaded file into a directory of your choice,
  • ensure, that the correct Java Runtime Environment is installed on your system,
  • start the application by using the launcher script from the bin directory

If the application fails to start, e.g. because you have an incompatible Java Runtime Environment version in your path or SmartGit does not find it, please create ~/.smartgit/smartgit.vmoptions and add the line (and adding the correct path):

jre=/path/to/jre

To create an icon in your menus, invoke add-menuitem.sh in the bin directory. To remove the menu item, invoke remove-menuitem.sh in the bin directory.
